Light and digital photography
The word "photography" is derived from two Greek words: photos (light) and graphos (drawing). Photography literally means "light writing" or "writing with light."
Photographic images are captured on light sensitive surfaces such as film or, in the case of digital photography, on a sensor.
Light is the essence of photography. It's important to understand some of the challenges and opportunities of working with both natural and artificial light.
To quote George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company:
"Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography."
