The high-end Canon PowerShot S100 is much improved over its predecessors. And it’s still small enough to slip into your pocket.

While the Canon s95 had a few cosmetic and other minor improvements over the s90, the s100 has several significant changes. Notable ones are boldfaced:

  • 12 Megapixel CMOS sensor 1/1.7-inch
  • New DIGIC 5 Image Processor that Canon says is six times faster than the previous processor
  • 5x Optical Zoom with 24mm wide angle lens (24-120mm equivalent focal range) with seven preset focal lengths
  • 3″ wide LCD – Approx. 461,000 dots
  • Aperture range: f/2.0 (W) – f/5.9 (T) – f/2.0 lens for low-light conditions or shallow depth-of-field
  • ISO 80 – 6400
  • Multi-Area White Balance – analyzes several areas of an image to determine if different adjustments are needed, say, for the main subject and the background.
  • Three levels of Noise reduction: Standard, High, Low
  • Manual, semi-automatic and full automatic modes, including SmartAuto and P Modes
  • FlexiZone – lets you change the position and size of the AutoFocus frame
  • Control ring for manual adjustment of key functions such as ISO, Exposure Compensation, zoom and focus
  • Ring function button that can be customized
  • Face detection and 23 scene modes
  • Continuous Shooting:
    Approx. 2.3 shots/sec. (in P mode)
    Approx. 9.6 shots/sec. (in High-Speed Burst mode)
  • Intelligent Image Stabilization – automatically chooses from six different modes to optimize image stabilization for the shooting condition (Normal, Macro, Panning, Dynamic, Powered, Tripod)
  • High Dynamic Range mode (i-Contrast)
  • Best Image Selection – the camera can shoot a series of five image and will select and save the best one.
  • Built-in Neutral Density Filter
  • Full HD 1080p video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button; Zoom while shooting; play back videos on an HDTV via the HDMI output. Focus, brightness and tone will be adjusted automatically when shooting movies. Ability to adjust Exposure Compensation before recording (only when the camera is set to Video Mode).
  • Full range of shooting and recording modes including RAW + JPEG
  • Small finger grip on the front of the camera; improved thumb rest on the back of the camera
  • Built-in GPS tracker with image tagging and logger functions
